Route 22 East Lane Closures Expected In Union County

The lane closures are necessary to move the construction barrier and restripe the highway to implement a traffic shift, said NJDOT.

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — Drivers can expect lane closures on Route 22 East on Tuesday night on the Bridge over Echo Lake as the bridge deck replacement project advances in Mountainside, announced the New Jersey Department of Transportation(NJDOT).

Beginning at 9 p.m., Tuesday, until 6 a.m. Wednesday, a single lane on Route 22 East is scheduled to be closed from milepost 50.6 near the Mountainside Avenue ramp to Route 22 eastbound to milepost 50.8 near the Spanish Tavern restaurant.

Construction is expected to begin in the right lane and move to the left lane as work progresses. The lane closures are necessary to move the construction barrier and restripe the roadway to implement a traffic shift, according to the NJDOT.

At least one lane of traffic will be maintained overnight. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays when driving through the work zone.

All lanes will be reopened by 6 a.m. Wednesday with traffic on Route 22 East shifted to the right onto the newly constructed right lane and shoulder. The shift is necessary for final paving of the left lane on Route 22 East and is expected to remain in place through summer 2025.
