Several Car Burglaries In Westfield Over Past Week: Police

Residents reported expensive sneakers and tennis rackets stolen from their cars last week, according to Westfield Police.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Several residents experienced car burglaries and thefts over the past week, according to Westfield Police Department's most recent police blotter.

Two residents reported that several expensive items were stolen from their cars, and others reported attempted thefts last week.

In Mayor Shelley Brindle's recent update, she said, overall, auto thefts are trending downward in Westfield so far this year. She said there's been a total of four cars stolen this year-to-date.

"While these four cars represent a 50% reduction over stolen cars at this point last year, it’s important for residents to stay vigilant and secure their property," Brindle wrote.

The most recent theft occurred on Friday, May 6, when an unlocked Land Rover with the key fob inside was stolen out of resident's driveway on the 400 block of Hillside Avenue, according to Brindle. Police said a stolen car was also recovered in the area during the investigation.

Earlier last week, on May 1, a resident's car was burglarized while parked overnight on the 100 block of North Cottage Place. According to Westfield Police, the resident said her car was parked in her driveway and was unlocked at the time of the incident.

The resident said when she returned to her car, she noticed that the door was ajar. She told police that the glove box and center console were open with various items strewn about the vehicle. She said no items were stolen from the car, however.

Also on May 1, a resident on the 300 block of Landsdown Avenue reported that two pairs of sneakers were stolen from a black-colored bag in their car. One pair of sneakers, described as a blue-colored Harden polka-dot sneakers and the second pair of sneakers, described as a pair of Kyrie 1 All Star sneakers, were valued at approximately $180 and $550, totaling $730 in stolen items.

A similar car burglary also occurred on Saturday, May 7, when a resident on the 200 block of Golf Edge said someone stole $2,690 worth of tennis rackets from their car. During the investigation, police found all of the tennis rackets on the 200 block of Lynn Lane. These items were then returned to the owner.

Lastly, an attempted burglary occurred on Friday, May 6 from a resident's car on Carol Road. The car was parked in the resident's driveway, and the suspect attempted to open the driver's side door, but it was locked and they were unable to enter.

There were no items taken from the vehicle, nor was there any damage to the vehicle. The incident was captured on the resident's surveillance system, according to police.
