WESTFIELD, NJ — Mayor Shelley Brindle provided an update on the recent incident where a 15-year-old boy was assaulted and robbed in downtown Westfield on Saturday.

Brindle said at Tuesday night's Westfield Town Council meeting that police identified an underage suspect, who is not a Westfield resident, and "charged him accordingly" on Tuesday afternoon.

The investigation of this case remains ongoing and additional charges against other people involved may be forthcoming, Brindle said.

According to the Westfield Police report, the 15-year-old was attacked by a group of five people, suspected to be teen boys, while standing on the 200 block of East Broad Street at around 9:35 p.m. on Saturday.

Brindle added that the Police Chief Christopher Battiloro advises that the "recent widespread disorderly conduct of juveniles occurring in downtown Westfield will not be tolerated."

The Downtown Westfield Quality of Life Unit will be continuously deployed on select nights throughout the summer months, Brindle said.

"Incidents like the one that occurred on Saturday will be thoroughly investigated, and identified suspects will be criminally charged," Brindle said. "We are committed to ensuring that our downtown remains a safe and inviting destination for shoppers and diners, and one that is reflective of our business owners’ continued investment and commitment."

A similar incident involving minors occurred on May 13 when two 14-year-olds were assaulted by another group of minors at Mindowaskin Park. The two victims told police there were approximately six male minors who attacked them at around 9:40 p.m. that night.
