Uprooted Tree Falls Onto I-78 Causing Car Crash In Union County

Volunteer firefighters worked with state troopers to remove the tree with a chainsaw on Thursday.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — An uprooted tree that fell onto Interstate 78 caused a car crash on Thursday in Berkeley Heights.

At 3:17 p.m., the Berkeley Heights Fire Department and the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad were called to I-78 East and Plainfield Avenue following a report of a vehicle hitting a tree, said the fire department.

The crash occurred when a tree, uprooted from an embankment far below, fell onto the viaduct connecting Berkeley Heights and Watchung, said the fire department.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) evaluated the people in the vehicle and determined that no injuries were sustained.

"As the evening rush hour began and traffic congestion worsened, BHFD personnel worked with the New Jersey State Police to clear the tree. Using a chainsaw, firefighters were able to reopen the left lane, easing traffic and reducing the risk of further accidents," said the fire department.
