Westfield Boys’ Winter Track & Field Team Named Group 4 State Champs

The boys' track and field team defeated their Group 4 State Championship title fresh off of Sectionals last week.

WESTFIELD, NJ - Congratulations are in order as the Westfield boys’ winter track and field team successfully defended their Group 4 State Championship title on Saturday.

Fresh off their Sectional title last week, the boys’ team qualified 16 individuals and one relay for the state championship meet at The Bubble in Toms River last weekend. The result: Westfield defeated 32 other teams, outscoring second place Union by just 2 points, 34-32, according to Varsity Vantage Westfield.

The 1600m run earned Westfield 2nd, 4th, and 5th place with 14 points, thanks to Westfield junior Avery Keith (4:15.87), junior Tage Mehta (4:17.19) and sophomore Ryan Daly (4:18.73), respectively.

Keith also finished 2nd in the 3200m (9:20.77), earning another 8 points for Westfield. Notably, senior Daniel Cortese placed 11th with a personal best of 9:34.75, Varsity Vantage said.

Middle distance seniors Jonathan Scalia, Liam Maurillo, and junior Jimmy Gildea earned 10 points for Westfield in the 800m event, with Scalia and Maurillo placing in 3rd and 4th place.

Only .43 seconds separated 2nd thru 5th place in the 4x400m.

Also competing were seniors Leo Schwartz and Eamon Collins in the high jump and Noah Perez in the pole vault, per Varsity Vantage.
