Westfield High School Seniors Receive Biliteracy Certificates

The Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey (FLENJ), in partnership with the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages/New Jersey Bilingual Educators (NJTESOL/NJBE), have joined a federal initiative to recognize high school graduates who have accomplished a level of proficiency in more than one language in addition to English.

Sixty-eight graduating seniors and 11 juniors at Westfield High School have met the criteria established by the initiative and have each received a Seal of Biliteracy certificate, officials from Westfield Public Schools said. The Seal of Biliteracy documents that the student has attained the proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English.

“The Seal of Biliteracy allows students from diverse backgrounds to be recognized for the inherent value of their native language as well as the added value of another language they acquire; therefore, both English Language Learners and native Anglophone students enrolled in a World Language at Westfield High School are eligible for recognition,” David Greer, Supervisor of World Languages in the Westfield Public Schools, said.
