Advanced Placement Students Recognized at West Orange High School
The Advanced Placement program at West Orange High School offered junior and senior students more rigorous academic challenges.

Students in the Advanced Placement program at West Orange High School were recognized at the high school earlier this week for their accomplishments.
The students were recognized on May 26 for their accomplishments within the program. The students recognized at the ceremony represented seniors who had taken an Advanced Placement exam in 2014 and 2014 graduates, according to the school district.
“Over the past three years, we advanced from 74 percent scoring 3 or above to 81 percent scoring 3 or above,” Assistant Principal Dr. Kimberly Mancarella said in a release from the school district. “In 2013, 313 AP students took 569 AP exams. In 2014, 350 AP students took 682 AP exams.”

The Advanced Placement program offers junior and senior students at West Orange High School with more rigorous academic challenges, similar to a first year college course, as well as the chance to take an Advanced Placement exam. Students who score a 3 or higher are eligible to receive college credit at many colleges and universities across the country.
“West Orange High School consistently scores above state and national averages in AP testing,” Mancarella continued. “In 2014, 81.1 percent of our students scored a 3 or while the New Jersey average was 74.2 percent and the national average was 61.3 percent.”

College Board AP Scholars were also recognized during the ceremony. Students must score a 3 or better on three or more AP exams and AP Scholars with Honor must score an average of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and score a 3 or higher on four or more exams, school district officials said.
National AP Scholars were recognized, as well. National AP Scholars averaged a score of 4 or better on eight or more Advanced Placement exams.
The name of each student recognized will appear on a plaque outside the Conforti Office.
