Fatal Crash On I-280 In The Oranges; Car Veers Off Road, Collides With Trees

A car crash claimed a 79-year-old man's life on I-280 in Essex County, authorities say.

THE ORANGES, NJ — A fatal crash claimed a 79-year-old man’s life on I-280 in Essex County last weekend, authorities say.

According to the New Jersey State Police, the crash took place around 1 a.m. on Sunday on the eastbound portion of the highway near milepost 6.5 in Orange.

A Honda SUV veered off the road, struck a mound of sand, overturned and collided with two trees, police said.

The driver – Joel Sterling, 79, of Orange – sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

Sterling’s death remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately available.
