Fatal Train Strike In South Orange Causes NJ Transit Delays (UPDATED)

THE ORANGES, NJ — A pedestrian died after being struck by a train in Essex County on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

According to alerts from NJ Transit, the fatality took place at the train station in South Orange and impacted the Morris and Essex line.

A spokesperson provided Patch with the following statement about the fatality:

“At approximately 9:12 a.m., Morris and Essex Line train 6324, which departed Summit at 8:56 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Penn Station New York at 9:42 a.m., struck and fatally injured an adult pedestrian near the South Orange Station. There were no reported injuries to the 60 customers or crew on board.”

NJ Transit police are leading an investigation into the fatality.

Morris and Essex and Gladstone Branch rail service saw delays up to 30-minutes in both directions due to the fatality. Train service is operating on or close to schedule in both directions with residual delays, NJ Transit announced Wednesday afternoon.
