NJ Transit to Add Trains and Reduce Commuting Time

As of March 24, West Orange commuters should benefit from NJ Transit's system-wide schedule adjustments and added trains.

NJ Transit announced Tuesday, four of the Midtown Direct trains schedules will be adjusted to reduce travel time at the South Orange train station. Fifteen more trains will also be added to the Morris and Essex train lines during peak periods.

Mayor Robert D. Parisi worked alongside state officials and local municipalities to bring commuter concerns to New Jersey Transit’s attention, addressing issues with service changes caused by Superstorm Sandy.

"This change is a big step to help mitigate travel issues for the hundreds of Township residents who use the South Orange train station to commute to Manhattan and Hoboken,” Parisi said.

Officials announced that they had focused on reducing travel time on the popular 6:19 p.m. train by eliminating Newark and Seacaucus stops, which reduces travel time by six minutes and re-arranges the stack of trains to reduce current delays caused by local trains.

Additionally, by eliminating Seacaucus stops on other trains, travel times have been able to be reduced on other popular midtown direct lines as well.

The additional trains will fully restore in bound service during morning peak period to Hoboken from the Gladstone and Morristown lines. Also, full restoration of evening peak period outbound service from Hoboken to the Morristown Line west of Summit and from Hoboken to the Gladstone Line.

NJ Transit announced as of March 24, it will also:

• Run electric-powered trains will run to and from the Hoboken Terminal again.
• Add two trains to Montclair-Booton line: Restoration of a morning peak period train from Montclair State University to Hoboken and an afternoon departure from Hoboken to Denville.
• Four additional trains for the Main-Bergen line: Full restoration of evening peak period outbound service from Hoboken.
