Santa Swaps Sleigh for Sunshine & Brings Holiday Cheer to Children in the Hospital

It's Christmas in July at Hackensack University Medical Center

On Friday, July 25, the New Jersey Police Honor Legion (NJHL) delivered hundreds of gifts to Hackensack University Medical Center. Our Child Life team members met them outside the Helena Theurer Pavillion to graciously accept the gifts and take a few photos.

The celebration was established by NJHL executive board member, Timothy Sullivan. After serving as a first responder on September 11, 2001, Timothy was diagnosed with cancer. While receiving care at HUMC, he saw children undergoing the same treatment and felt compelled to give back. This was how Christmas in July began.

Timothy sadly passed away in 2022, but his legacy of community and generosity lives on through this joyous event.

Santa Claus himself awaited each guest in the Boscamp Solarium. He was joined by Captain America and Spider-Man. All were played by NJHL members.

Festive decorations adorned each wall and tables for snacks and crafts were set up. Two of our service dogs also made an appearance to provide some cuddly company. Santa and the team also made bedside visits later that afternoon to children who were not able to physically attend the celebration.

Not only was the celebration a massive success, it also marked the end of the Child Life Team’s annual Spirit Week. Activities began that Monday with Disney/Superhero Day, followed by Outer Space Day, Sports Day and Animal Day. Team members showed up dressed to match each day’s theme. Even Cinderella herself paid our patients a visit.

Christmas in July has become one of our hospital’s most important annual celebrations. It brings joy and a sense of normalcy to children and families for whom a little cheer can go a long way. Their laughs and smiles are evidence of the compassionate spirit you all work so passionately to cultivate.
