'Star Local Student' In West Orange Has Outstanding Leadership Skills

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students in New Jersey, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

One such student? Mason of West Orange, who was nominated by Stephan Zichella.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Mason Bashkoff is a remarkable student-athlete whose outstanding leadership skills and unwavering commitment to his team, school, and community make him a deserving candidate for the Star Student recognition.

Mason co-founded the West Orange High School Sports Media Association, a student-led initiative that has made significant contributions to the school's sports program and the local community. Mason launched several successful initiatives, including the "Scholar Athlete of the Week" program in partnership with local businesses to support students and local eateries, a voter registration campaign for student athletes, an NBA2K custom West Orange graphics kit, and a 'Campus Cleanup' for student athletes for Earth Day, promoting environmental consciousness among the at community at large.

Under Mason's leadership, the Sports Media Association has created a buzz in the community like never before. Their photo gallery of media days, gameday photos, and more has been viewed over 2 million times and their social media network reaches over 50K unique users monthly. Mason also secured significant startup sponsorship funds from the West Orange Mountain High School Alumni Association during the Summer 2022.

As a four-year starter and captain of the West Orange boys varsity soccer team, Mason played a pivotal role in leading the team to its 2022 Sectional Championship victory, demonstrating outstanding leadership, dedication, and resilience. Additionally, his academic achievements, ranking in the top 10% of his graduating class, are a testament to his strong work ethic and determination to excel in all aspects of his life.

Mason's leadership has set a new standard in community involvement and school spirit, making him a deserving candidate for the Star Student recognition.
