West Orange Jitney Will Take Seniors To New Library (What To Know)

Are you a senior who needs a lift to the town's new public library? West Orange is expanding its jitney bus service.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange is extending its jitney bus service for seniors who need a ride to the town’s new public library.

The library’s highly anticipated new location at 10 Rooney Circle opened to the public earlier this month after a series of delays and funding issues. Read More: West Orange Library Reopens At New Location

The new library has 32,000 square feet with more than 7,000 square feet dedicated for “community use.” Other features of the new library include upgraded technology, meeting rooms that the public can use, an area dedicated for teens, and a larger area for children’s programing.

The library now comes with another feature, officials announced this week: jitney service for local seniors.

“West Orange township is extending its existing jitney bus services to include senior transportation to and from the library,” a municipal spokesperson said.

“This is a proactive step that promises to make the new library accessible as a community hub for people of all ages,” he added.

Here’s what to know about the new service, officials said.

HOURS OF OPERATION – "This Senior Transportation Service ensures that older adults who may face challenges in driving or commuting independently can still enjoy all benefits the library offers. The transportation service operates on a convenient schedule Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m. when the last pick up is scheduled. However, reasonable accommodations for those with special circumstances can be made upon request."

HOW TO RESERVE A SEAT – "Those needing a ride on the jitney bus should call a day before to reserve a seat by calling (973) 325-4134. Medical appointments to dialysis, doctor, dentist, clinic, hospital, or pharmacy will take priority over transportation to the library."

OTHER DETAILS – "The Township jitney bus service provides for curb-to-curb transportation for residents age 60 and over on a call-in basis. Individuals must be ambulatory and able to meet drivers at the curb and board the bus on their own or bring an aide to help them. A safety step is available with assistance from the driver if needed. Residents should allow for a 15-minute waiting time for scheduled pick-ups in most cases. The transportation service promises to enhance the overall experience of West Orange older adults by providing a convenient and reliable means of accessing the library's resources.
