West Orange May Tweak Towing Company Rules, Ordinance Proposed

A proposed ordinance would change storage yard requirements for towing companies that work with the town's police department.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange might be tweaking its requirements for towing companies that work with the town’s police department. The goal? To cast a wider net when it comes to availability.

Earlier this week, the West Orange Town Council unanimously voted to approve 2919-25 on first reading. View the full text here, or read it below.

Here’s what the ordinance would do:

“The purpose of this ordinance is to revise the municipal code provision governing the licensing for towing companies operating within the Township of West Orange to extend the radius of the requirement for towing licensee’s principal storage yard from a principal storage yard located within the boundaries of the Township of West Orange to a principal storage yard within three miles from the geographical center of the Township of West Orange.”

According to the current regulations, the principal storage yard for all vehicles towed at the request of police must be within the boundaries of the Township of West Orange.

If the ordinance passes, companies will be allowed to have their principal storage yards up to three miles away from the "center" of town.
