West Orange Woman Turns 101, Earns Proclamation From Town On Her Birthday
Rita Altman has witnessed many defining moments in American history – and lived a life marked with public service and joy.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — A longtime West Orange resident was recently presented with a proclamation for her 101st birthday.
Rita Altman celebrated her birthday on Thursday. A party was held at Brandywine in Livingston – where she now resides – which included warm wishes from family, fellow residents and West Orange Mayor Susan McCartney.

WITNESSING HISTORY - “Born in Newark on October 23, 1924, Altman has lived through more than a century of extraordinary change witnessing defining moments in American history. Her life has been rooted in family, service, and community. She shared 76 years of marriage with her late husband, Daniel Altman, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 99. Together, they made West Orange their home for 67 years, raising their three children: Linda, Wayne and Jeffrey.”
SERVICE OVERSEAS - “During World War II with her husband overseas, Altman demonstrated her commitment to service by volunteering as a Red Cross nurse’s aide at Newark Beth Israel Hospital. Her dedication to helping others reflected the spirit of her generation whose resilience and sacrifice helped shape the nation during the crucial war years.”

POST-WAR SERVICE - “After the war, Altman’s work ethic and passion for learning led her to pursue a bachelor of science degree in office systems management at Montclair State University while working for Russo Brothers. Her professional career also extended to public service where she served on the Essex County Board of Elections for 50 years.”
“Beyond her professional accomplishments, Altman’s life has been defined by family, friendship and joy,” town officials said of the centenarian.
“Once an avid cook and enthusiastic world traveler, she now enjoys spending her time playing mahjong and bridge with fellow residents at the Brandywine in Livingston,” the township shared. “She remains an active member of Temple Beth Shalom and its Sisterhood, continuing to live with a deep appreciation for her friends and family.”
