1 Arrest In 'Street Takeover' Of Victory Bridge Sunday In Perth Amboy

Like a scene from "The Fast & The Furious," dozens of cars took over Victory Bridge/Rt. 35 Sunday for drag racing, doughnuts and burnouts:

PERTH AMBOY, NJ — Like a scene from "The Fast & The Furious" movies, there was a large gathering of cars in what police are calling a "street takeover" in Sunday evening's balmy weather in Perth Amboy.

Witnesses reported seeing cars clog the streets at the intersection of Victory Bridge, Convery Blvd. (Rt. 35, one of the main arteries in the county) and Smith Street. Perth Amboy Police report cars were doing doughnuts, burnouts, revving their engines and drag racing each other. One news report put the crowd size at 300 people.

On Tuesday, Perth Amboy Police said they arrested one man in connection with the gathering, Deyvi Navarette-Menjivar, 21, of Plainfield. Police called him a "key arrest" in the street racing event, but did not say the crime he was charged with.
