Former General Dynamics Property Could Become Avenel Arts Village

A final public hearing will take place on the village on May 21.

At the May 7 Woodbridge Township Council meeting a public hearing was held on the Avenel Arts Village, but due to a misprint in the Star Ledger the Township will host a continuation hearing on May 21 for those who may have received the wrong information.

The Avenel Arts Village is a plan to create housing, an arts center and retail space at the location of the former General Dynamics property in Avenel.

In 2007 the Township looked to the Planning Board to study if the General Dynamics was in need of redevelopment and an in-depth redevelopment plan was created in 2009, but was recently adjusted this March.

According to the report, the vacant industrial properties have not been used in over a dozen years and border an NJ Transit rail and Avenel Street.

The plan calls for up to 500 residential units to be built that will be apartments or townhomes with exclusively one or two bedrooms. The purpose of the plan is to take advantage of the vacant property's close proximity to the Avenel Train Station and serve as a Transit, Artisan village.

Woodbridge Township Council President Charles Kenny informed the public at the May 7 meeting that any environmental issues that may exist on the property must be fully remediated by the builder in ordinance with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s current standards.

The Council encouraged all members of the public to view the plan thoroughly before addressing any questions that might already be outlined.
