Groundbreaking For Carteret Ferry Terminal Will Be Friday

CARTERET, NJ — The groundbreaking for the Carteret ferry terminal will be this Friday, Dec. 12.

This is the four-story 52,000-square-foot ferry terminal Carteret is building next to Waterfront Park on the Arthur Kill, located at 200 Middlesex Avenue.

The proposed Carteret ferry terminal will have a ticketing area, restrooms, leasable office space, restaurants, retail, rooftop space open to the public, a bar/lounge and an event hall.

The town is aiming for an early 2028 opening of the ferry terminal. However, ferry service may start running before that, as customers would be able to purchase tickets through a smartphone app on a kiosk on the dock of the ferry slips — that is, if Carteret signs a deal with a ferry provider to provide the service, such as NY Waterways or SeaStreak. In August, the town of Carteret said they would even consider running the ferries themselves, if they cannot secure a ferry provider.

Carteret already has two ferry boats: The Theodore Roosevelt is docked at the Carteret town marina, and the second is under construction in New Orleans.

On Oct. 31, awarded a $47.5 million contract to Brockwell and Carrington of Towaco to build the ferry terminal.
