NJ Families Spending as Much as $10,000 on Senior Year

Senior year activities, including prom, college visits, a yearbook, a class ring, and other activities can quickly add up.

The final year of high school comes at a high cost for some New Jersey families, according to a report on NJ 101.5.

College visits, prom, a class ring, a yearbook and testing can add up to as much as $10,000 for some families coming to the end of a student's high school career, according to the report.

“It’s hard for a parent to say ‘no’ if their child comes home from school and says all the other kids are taking a limo to the prom," Deborah Carr, a sociology professor at Rutgers was quoted as saying in the report. "You know mom and dad don’t want to be the ones saying no, and they don’t want their child to be on the out; for their child to be the exception."
