Imagine waking up one morning, your world instantly changed by a sudden, unexplained paralysis. For 40-year-old Giannina, this nightmare became a reality, leading to a medically induced coma and a deep despair that left her asking, "Why am I here?"

But her story was far from over. At JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, a dedicated team refused to let her give up. Under the expert care of Jennifer M. Chui, M.D., and physical therapist Sharanya Chavva, Giannina began a remarkable journey back to independence. Fueled by innovative treatments like robotic gait training and a compassionate approach that her fiancé says "helped her not just medically but also emotionally," Giannina started to reclaim her life.

Today, she is not only living an active, independent life but is taking steps with a walker, determined to one day walk again. She calls her care team her "angels."
