Many of us plan our lives — we arrange weddings, education for our children, family vacations, retirement, and other significant expected life events. As we know, preparing and planning for unexpected life events also is important to avoid decision-making with urgency and stress.

Today, many burial arrangements are made in advance to ease a family’s burden at a difficult time. A time of loss is a time of confusion, and final arrangements do not have to add to the uncertainty. Deciding the details of cemetery arrangements in advance for yourself or a loved one may sound difficult, but putting a plan in place is a responsible and loving gesture that offers individuals, couples, and families peace of mind.

“The worries of last-minute burial arrangements should not become part of a family's grieving process, especially when experiencing profound sorrow from the loss of a loved one,” said Andrew P. Schafer, executive director of Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark.

“It's why we reach out regularly to families to inform them about the benefits of preplanning,” Schafer added.” Time and again, grieving families attest to the appreciable difference of preset arrangements in easing their time of loss. It allows family members to honor and celebrate the life of their departed loved one knowing their wishes are being carried out as prearranged."
