Warehouse Construction Did Indeed Cause Quarter-Mile-Long Crack On Smith Street

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — The very long crack running down the length of Smith Street in Woodbridge was indeed caused by construction nearby of a 970,000-square-foot warehouse, Tony Caputo of News 12 reported Friday.

The Middlesex County Department of Transportation confirmed the crack was caused by the warehouse construction. The very large warehouse is being built right next door to Smith Street.

The heavy construction work and pressure ruptured the road.

That part of Smith Street/Rt. 440 is a main artery connecting Perth Amboy to Woodbridge. It will remain closed for the next several weeks as Middlesex County repairs the road.

News 12 also reports the crack is filled with asphalt as of Friday morning.

The very large, mysterious crack was first noticed Sept. 4.

The crack proceeded to get bigger and is currently about a quarter-mile long, running down the length of Smith Street. It is about a foot wide.
