72 Bottle Rockets Confiscated on Fourth of July

The Woodbridge Police crackdown on fireworks resulted in less issues than previous years.

Woodbridge Police warned residents in the days prior to the Fourth of July that the department would be cracking down on the use of illegal firworks.

On July 4, police responded to 78 complaints of illegal fireworks, one of which resulted in the confiscation of 72 bottle rockets, 31 packs of jumping jack fireworks and two M80’s.

Additionally the department responded to nine complaints on July 5 and 38 on July 6. Three individuals were charged with possession and/or discharge of illegal fireworks, according to Woodbridge Police.

The WPD closely monitored areas of the township that have been problems in the past for large scale illegal fireworks, such as Port Reading School #9, Kennedy Park School #24, Claremont Avenue School #20, JFK High School and Clyde Avenue Park. Deputy Director of Police Joseph Nisky said the department was happy to report that those areas were not a problem this year.

Mayor John McCormac added that the department had put up yellow caution tape at those locations, but that the parks and schools were not closed. He stated that next year they will be less aggressive with the caution tape so that residents know the parks and schools are still opened, just not for fireworks.
