WOODBRIDGE, NJ — On Wednesday, Mayor John McCormac and the DPW unveiled the newest additions to the Woodbridge town fleet: Three electric passenger shuttles, three electric garbage trucks, plus an electric roll-off garbage truck, which Woodbridge says is the first of its kind in the nation.

Woodbridge is growing its fleet of electric vehicles used by the Township. The electric garbage trucks will serve the community more quietly and cleanly than gas-powered trucks, said McCormac. Each shuttle bus holds up to 14 passengers and has a range of 105 miles. They will be an addition to the Senior Transportation of Woodbridge Fleet (S.T.O.W.).

The garbage truck and senior shuttles will operate on fixed routes and complete their rounds "well within the battery range," and charge overnight when electric costs are lower, said McCormac.

"By reducing harmful emissions from our municipal fleet, we’re improving air quality, cutting down on noise pollution and building a cleaner, healthier Woodbridge Township for generations to come," said McCormac.

The new vehicles and electric charging stations were funded through grants from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Since 2019, Woodbridge has worked with Hudson County Motors, BYD and Motiv Electric Trucks to buy more electric town vehicles for the town. The BYD models purchased by Woodbridge are a Rear-Loader, Side-Loader and the first electric Roll-Off in the country.

“This initiative represents the future of public works,” said George T. Brew, Director of Public Works. “These new electric vehicles aren’t just about cleaner operations—they’re about smarter service. We’re reducing our environmental impact while enhancing the way we serve our community, and that’s something we’re incredibly proud of.”
