The Franklin Lakes Board of Education unanimously approved the proposed 2013-14 school-year calendar Wednesday evening. There are a total of 187 teacher days and 183 student days with 3 incliment weather days are built in.
Are you planning a trip for late June? Not so fast. The calendar includes language that covers the school in case something like Sandy strikes again.
"This calendar may be extended should unforseen circumstances require it or subject to the work year being extended. Therefore, no plans which cannot be changed should be made prior to June 30. The Board of Education reserves the right to modify the calendar as may be deemed necessary. This includes reducing/eliminating vacation periods. If additional days are required, they will be as follows: end of June and/or April."

One of the main issues in setting up the school calendar is trying to align the it with the local high schools' calendar.
"A lot of folks have kids in both the K-8 and the high school district so as much alignment as possible is the goal," said School Board President Susan McGowan. "We have a different start date than the high school's but our breaks are coordinated so that is a step in the right direction."
