📰 News we're reading

1. Lawsuit Claims San Juan County Sheriff Ignored Red Flag Law Before Deadly Shooting (newsradiokkob.com) — A new lawsuit filed in Farmington claims San Juan County Sheriff Shane Ferrari’s office failed to use New Mexico’s red flag law before a 2023 murder-suicide that killed 19-year-old Aeriel Gallegos. Attorneys say deputies knew of prior abuse and a long-term restraining order but never sought an Extreme Risk Firearm Protection order. The suit seeks damages for Gallegos’ young daughter and could influence how the sheriff enforces the law.

2. City of Farmington opens new bridge over Animas River to better connect the region (krqe.com) — Farmington has officially opened its long-planned second bridge over the Animas River, giving drivers a new Piñon Hills Boulevard connection that should significantly cut commute times across town. Local and state leaders say the $40 million project, decades in the making, will eventually extend over Crouch Mesa to better link Farmington with the rest of San Juan County.

3. New Mexico DOJ unveils statewide gun data center (tricityrecordnm.com) — Farmington gun crimes could now be linked more quickly statewide through New Mexico’s new Crime Gun Intelligence Center, which uses advanced ballistics tools installed with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. The system lets analysts match shell casings from Farmington to crimes in cities like Albuquerque, aiming to curb gun trafficking and help local detectives solve cases faster.

4. A new alert for missing Native people has been issued just six times. State police deny most requests. (nmindepth.com) — Farmington police have requested seven Turquoise Alerts for missing Native people since July, but state police approved only two, denying five that still involved local searches. The story explains how New Mexico’s strict legal definition of a “missing person” is limiting alerts statewide, why Farmington and Gallup are especially affected as border towns to the Navajo Nation, and how lawmakers may revise the statute.

5. Zia Park opposing racino in Clovis (easternnewmexiconews.com) — Farmington stands to lose about 120 jobs if SunRay Park and Casino is moved to Clovis, a proposal now facing new opposition from Zia Park in Hobbs. Zia argues the relocation would hurt existing racetracks and communities, while SunRay’s owners tout higher statewide tax revenues and a major new racino complex near Clovis. The Racing Commission has postponed its decision indefinitely.
