Mary Mara, 'ER' And 'Ray Donovan' Actor, Dies In Apparent Drowning

Mara, 61, whose career spanned 30 years, died while swimming in the St. Lawrence River near Cape Vincent, New York, state police said.

CAPE VINCENT, NY — Mary Mara, an actress whose career spanned 30 years and was best known for her roles in "ER," "Ray Donovan" and "Nash Bridges," died Sunday while swimming in a New York river, state police confirmed. She was 61.

According to New York State Police, authorities were called to 33753 Old Farm Road in the town of Cape Vincent on Sunday morning for a possible drowning. Officers said they found Mara's body in the St. Lawrence River.

According to police, Mara's body showed no signs of foul play. Authorities said it's likely she drowned while swimming.

Mara's body was taken to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will officially determine her cause of death.

In a statement, her manager, Craig Dorfman, described her as "electric, funny, and a true individual" who was well-loved and was a tremendous actress.

Mara's earliest acting credit goes back to the 1989 movie “The Preppie Murder." The New York native worked regularly ever since, in a combination of repeat characters in some shows and appearances in others.

She acted in movies including "Mr. Saturday Night" with Billy Crystal and "Prom Night." Her last credit was in 2020 in a movie called "Break Even."
