Powerball Jackpot Surges To $1.4B: How, When To Play In NY

With a high degree of luck that has eluded Powerball players since May, a New York player could claim an estimated $1.4 billion jackpot in Wednesday’s drawing.

Lottery officials increased the jackpot Wednesday morning after reviewing ticket sales. Previously, it had been estimated at $1.3 billion.

“Tonight could be the night this billion-dollar Powerball jackpot is won!” Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, said in a news release. “Players are excited to take another shot at this growing jackpot, but we encourage everyone to play responsibly. It only takes one $2 ticket to win — all while supporting good causes in your community.”

The last time a jackpot-winning Powerball ticket was sold in New York was on Sept. 4, 2019, for $80,000,000 annuity and $57,306,590.26 cash.

No player matched the six numbers drawn Monday night: white balls 8, 23, 25, 40, 53 and red Powerball 5. The Power Play multiplier was 3.

The jackpot in Wednesday’s drawing has an estimated cash value of $634.3 million. It’s the fourth-largest jackpot in the history of the Powerball game, and the sixth-largest among U.S. lottery jackpot games.

To be considered in Wednesday’s drawing, which takes place at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time, tickets must be purchased by 9:59 p.m, according to the New York Lottery website.

The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

Nationwide, 10 tickets for Monday's drawing matched all five white balls to win $1 million prizes. The $1 million-winning tickets were sold in California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey (two), New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In California, prize payout amounts are parimutuel and determined by sales and the number of winners.

Two tickets matched all five white balls and increased their winnings to $2 million, by including the Power Play option for $1 more at purchase. The $2 million-winning tickets were sold in Montana and North Carolina.

Another 124 tickets won $50,000 prizes (Match 4 + PB) and 25 tickets won $150,000 prizes (Match 4 + PB + Power Play).

Wednesday’s Powerball drawing will be the 41st drawing since the jackpot was last won in California on May 31, 2025. To date, the longest Powerball jackpot run has been 42 consecutive drawings, which was set on April 6, 2024, with a $1.326 billion jackpot winner in Oregon.

Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a Powerball ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold. Since its first drawing in 1992, the Powerball game has helped generate more than $36 billion for good causes supported by U.S. lotteries.
