Tax Day 2023: How To File Extension In NY With Deadline Hours Away
Taxpayers in New York who are on the verge of missing Tuesday's deadline to file 2022 income tax returns can request an extension.
NEW YORK — Taxpayers in New York who are on the verge of missing Tuesday’s deadline to file 2022 income tax returns can request an extension from the IRS, but they’ll need to do that now. The April 18 tax deadline still applies.
What an extension does is give taxpayers six more months — until Oct. 16 — to prepare their federal tax returns. It does not extend the time to pay taxes. Taxpayers should estimate and pay any owed taxes to avoid any penalties, according to the IRS.
In New York, businesses affected by the 2022 blizzard in Erie, Genesee, Niagara, St. Lawrence or Suffolk counties can request an extension online. Those who need more time to file can request an income tax extension here or corporation tax extension here.

If you can't file on time, you can request an automatic extension of time to file the following forms:
- Form IT-201, Resident Income Tax Return
- Form IT-203, Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return
- Form IT-203-GR, Group Return for Nonresident Partners (Note: Group agents must enter the special identification number assigned to the partnership—that is, group ID 80081XXXX—in the Full Social Security number field.)
- Form IT-204, Partnership Return
- Form IT-205, Fiduciary Income Tax Return
Individuals must file an extension request by Tuesday. The extended due date would be Oct. 16.

If you apply for an extension and owe tax, you must make your extension payment by the due date.
Fiduciaries must also file an extension by Tuesday. Their extension due date would become Oct. 2.
For partnerships, the deadline to file a six-month extension was March 15.
Taxpayers in certain disaster areas already have longer to file their taxes and don’t need to ask for an extension.
Individual taxpayers can, regardless of income, use IRS Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension until Oct. 16 (the extension deadline is usually Oct. 15, but that falls on a Sunday this year).
Taxpayers also get an extension by electronically paying all or part of their estimated income tax due and indicating the payment is for an extension. Same-day payments may be made using online through account services, or they may be scheduled with Direct Pay using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System or with a credit or debit card.
