Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Albany so special.

Albany is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Albany has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Abany is the oldest continuously chartered city in the United States, dating back to 1686. This means that it has a rich history that visitors can explore, including the iconic New York State Capitol building and the USS Slater, a WWII destroyer escort that is now a floating museum.
- The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is a unique ecosystem that is home to many rare species of plants and animals. Visitors can explore the preserve's hiking trails, go birdwatching, or even try their hand at orienteering. It's a great way to get in touch with nature without leaving the city limits.
- Did you know that Albany is a hub for the performing arts? The Palace Theatre hosts a wide range of concerts, plays and musicals throughout the year, while the Albany Symphony Orchestra is one of the most respected orchestras in the country. Whether you're a fan of classical music or rock and roll, there's always something exciting happening in Albany's arts scene.
- Albany has a long history of activism and social justice movements. The city was a center for abolitionist activity in the 19th century, and the Women's Rights Convention was held here in 1852. Today, visitors can explore the Underground Railroad History Project, which tells the story of Albany's role in the fight against slavery.
- The Empire State Plaza is a massive complex of government buildings and public spaces that was built in the 1960s. The plaza is home to many works of public art, including the famous "Egg" sculpture, and hosts events like the annual New York State Food Festival.
