Astoria State Sen. Gianaris Launches Western Queens Reading Program

The hope of the 'Ocean of Possibilities' initiative is to help schoolchildren stay on track with their literacy during the summer months.

ASTORIA, NY — The theme for this year’s reading program launched Friday by state Sen. Michael Gianaris is “Oceans of Possibilities.” The purpose of the initiative is to encourage more Western Queens schoolchildren to attend libraries, even when schools are out for the summer.

All kids who participate in the senator’s reading program will receive a certificate signed by the elected official and parents, guardians and educators can go to gianaris.nysenate.gov to sign them up. The deadline for the program is Sept. 1, according to Gianaris’ office.

“Students benefit from continuing to read while school is out during the summer,” said Gianaris.“My summer reading challenge aims to ignite a love of learning by keeping children engaged in reading during the summer months. I encourage families and children to participate and read together during this time of year.”
