Boy, 5, Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver On Elmhurst Street: Police

Jonathan Martinez was crossing an East Elmhurst street with his family when a pickup driver fatally struck him before fleeing, police said.

EAST ELMHURST, QUEENS — A five-year-old boy was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver Thursday as he crossed a neighborhood street with his parents, according to police.

Jonathan Martinez and his family were steps from their East Elmhurst home around 5:30 p.m. Thursday as they prepared to cross 100th Street near the intersection of McIntosh Street, police said.

A person driving a white Dodge Ram pickup truck north along McIntosh made a u-turn onto southbound 100th Street, where he struck Jonathan, police said.

The boy was found with severe trauma to the head and torso, according to police. He was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, but could not be saved.

The driver fled the scene after the crash, police said. An investigation is ongoing by the NYPD's collision investigation squad.

One neighborhood resident told CBS News that the intersection has been a source of concern, attracting speeding drivers due to the lack of any stop signs or speed bumps.
