Free Pop-Up Programs Coming To Ditmars Open Boulevard In October
The free events in Astoria are part of the city's plan to expand Open Streets in underserved neighborhoods as the program becomes permanent.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — Earlier this year, the City Council voted to make NYC’s pandemic-borne Open Street Program permanent, and expand the car-free outdoor spaces in underserved neighborhoods — a promise that the city is making good on in Astoria six months later.
Throughout Oct., the Department of Transportation is bringing 10 pop-up programs to Open Streets, and other public areas, across the Bronx and Queens, including Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria on Oct. 15 and Oct. 16.
The agency is offering these programs in partnership with Lyft, which will promote Citi Bike at the various locations with half-price annual memberships.

“Open Streets have fundamentally transformed the relationship New Yorkers have with their neighborhoods,” said DOT Commissioner Hank Gutman. “We’re reclaiming space from cars while promoting educational and cultural activities and helping our neighbors embrace the bike boom in our city.”
The pop-up programs include play areas for kids, plant giveaways, and musical performances.

On Ditmars Boulevard, the city is bringing no-touch kids activities on Friday, Oct. 15, followed by a circus performance on Saturday, Oct. 16. Both events will take place on the street from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
