Mamdani To Appoint Lillian Bonsignore As New FDNY Commissioner

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has chosen the city's next FDNY commissioner, according to a new report.

Lillian Bonsignore, who previously worked as the FDNY's chief of EMS operations before retiring in 2022, will replace Robert Tucker, the previous FDNY commissioner, who officially stepped down on Dec. 19, NBC 4 New York reported.

Mamdani will officially announce the appointment Tuesday afternoon, according to the report.

Bonsignore's FDNY career dates back to 1991.

Tucker announced his resignation the day after Mamdani won the general election for mayor. He was appointed commissioner in 2024 after taking over Laura Kavanagh who also resigned.

Tucker did not disclose a reason for his resignation. Multiple media outlets, including the New York Post, have reported that the decision may be over Mamdani's criticism of Israel.
