Good Samaritan Battered With Hockey Stick In LIC Subway Attack: NYPD

A man who tried to stop an assault on a Long Island City subway platform was headbutted and whacked with his own hockey stick, police say.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A man was battered with a hockey stick after intervening in an assault at a Long Island City subway station this week, according to police.

The 54-year-old good Samaritan was standing on the platform at the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, waiting for a northbound E train, when he saw an unknown man punching another man nearby.

When the 54-year-old tried to intervene, the suspect headbutted him, grabbed a hockey stick that belonged to the man, and whacked him in the back of the neck, according to police.

The man let the station to parts unknown, while the good Samaritan was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Mount Sinai Hospital-Queens.

Police described the suspect as roughly 30 years old, with a light complexion, a medium build and a bald head. He was last seen wearing a gray polo shirt, tan pants, black-and-white shoes and a gray backpack.

Authorities released surveillance images showing the man on the street near 21st Street and 41st Avenue, and asked anyone with information to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
