LIC To Shelter Asylum Seekers At Wingate by Wyndham
The Wingate by Wyndham hotel, located at 38-70 12th Street, will be the city's seventh Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A hotel in Long Island City will house arriving asylum seekers as the influx of migrants continues to increase in New York City, Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday.
The Wingate by Wyndham hotel, located at 38-70 12th Street, will be the city’s seventh Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center and will provide 144 rooms to help families mostly coming from Venezuela to escape political chaos.
“As the number of asylum seekers who have moved through our intake process in the last 10 months has now surpassed the total number of people who were in the city’s shelter system when I took office, it’s clear that New York City is in dire need of more support from our federal partners,” Adams said.

More than 45,600 asylum seekers have arrived in the city since last spring, according to Adams.
The city has opened 85 hotels as emergency shelters and six other humanitarian relief centers. The city is also enrolling children in public schools.

The new shelter comes two weeks after asylum seekers refused to leave their shelter at a Manhattan hotel per the city’s request for them to move to a new migrant shelter in Brooklyn Cruise Terminal as the influx of newcomers is increasing.
Advocates said the Brooklyn shelter is inhumane, and migrants find the facility has “a lack of adequate heating and few bathrooms.”
