Long Island City NYPD Precinct Gets New Commanding Officer

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A new commanding officer has taken the reins of the NYPD's 108th Precinct, which patrols Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside.

Captain Lavonda Wise is no stranger to the 108th Precinct, where she previously served as an executive officer and was assigned to the school safety division.

Wise joined the department in 2003 and has spent time with the NYPD's Queens North patrol bureau, the 69th Precinct in Brooklyn and the Special Victims Unit, among others, according to a police spokesperson.

Wise has named her mother, NYPD Detective Laverda Pugliese-Phillips, as her inspiration in climbing the ranks of the police force.

NYPD Deputy Inspector Michael Gibbs, who was previously leading the 108th Precinct, is now assigned to the detective bureau, according to a police spokesperson.

Gibbs assumed the post in early 2019.
