'Movers Stole Our Stuff:' LIC Couple Waiting For Months: Report

The couple, who haven't seen their belongings since loading them onto a moving truck in November, now fears their items are gone for good.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — In November a couple loaded all of their furniture and homewares onto a moving truck in Arizona, headed for their new apartment in Long Island City — they haven't seen any of their belongings since.

Amy Newburg and her boyfriend paid Flash Moving & Storage, Inc., to transport their belongings across the country, but eight weeks after everything was packed up their items still haven't arrived — leaving the couple to sleep on an air mattress and work out of lawn chairs in their 34th Avenue apartment, CBSNY reported.

The couple are not the only ones to face challenges with Flash, the news outlet reported. Since 2020, 27 people have reported the company to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and the Better Business Bureau — or BBB — gives the movers an F rating, CBSNY found.

Claire Rosenzweig, president and CEO of BBB of Metropolitan NY, encouraged people who are moving to make sure they're dealing with a mover, not a broker; the latter sends out travel needs to a wide range of companies, meaning people who are moving might have to pay double and don't get a say in the company (this is what happened to Newburg and her boyfriend).

She also recommends getting at least three written estimates, opting for full value insurance (which covers the cost of the items), and moving irreplaceable valuables yourself, CBSNY reported.

Newburg is trying to hold out hopes that her items will come soon, but told CBSNY that Flash's limited communication makes her feel worried that her belongings might never be returned — a point she also made in a community post, which she titled "movers stole our stuff - need help please."

"I try to have the best of intentions for people and I just feel taken advantage of," she tearfully told CBSNY.
