Queens Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer Endorses Cynthia Nixon

The City Council deputy leader announced his support Thursday for Nixon in her Democratic primary run against Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

SUNNYSIDE, QUEENS -- Actress and gubernational hopeful Cynthia Nixon snagged a significant endorsement Thursday from City Councilman Deputy Leader Jimmy Van Bramer in her Democratic primary run against Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Van Bramer - who represents Astoria, Long Island City, Woodside and Sunnyside in Queens - pledged his support for the "Sex and the City" star turned left-wing governor candidate while standing beside her underneath the 46th Street-Bliss Street subway stop in Sunnyside.

"We deserve a champion for all of us, and Cynthia Nixon will be our champion," Bramer said. "I am proud to endorse her candidacy for Governor of the State of New York."

Nixon's significant endorsement echos Tuesday night's shakeup in New York's Democratic party when fellow political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ousted Queens Democratic Party Chair Joe Crowley from his spot representing Queens and the Bronx in the 14th Congressional District. In a shocking upset, the 28-year-old Democratic Socialist swept the primary election against her 10-term veteran opponent by 15 percent.

Ocasio-Cortez and Nixon have both publicly endorsed each other.

In his endorsement, Van Bramer called Nixon "a fighter for working class New Yorkers" and cited her history of championing for LGBT rights, equal access to education in public schools and much-needed repairs to the city's "broken" subway system.

The two posed for a photo-op on the 7 train shortly after his announcement.

"After announcing my support for @CynthiaNixon for Governor, of course we took the 7 train together," Van Bramer tweeted.

Cynthia Nixon also confirmed the endorsement on Twitter.

"Thrilled to be endorsed by Councilman @JimmyVanBramer," she wrote.

"He's been a fighter for LGBTQ equality for decades, an advocate for our subways, and a champion of the arts and our critical library system. We look forward to working with him to create a more equitable New York for us all."
