Soccer Start-Up Opening Its First Queens Outpost In LIC: Report

Socceroof, an indoor soccer field start-up, plans to open an LIC outpost that's been years in the making, Commercial Observer reported.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — An indoor sports complex is opening its first Queens outpost in Long Island City, according to a new report.

Socceroof, a startup that brings large soccer fields to the concrete jungle, plans to open a 10,000 square-foot complex at 36-39 35 Street in Long Island City, the Commercial Observer reported.

News of the soccer start-up's expansion comes about a week after residents of northwest Queens learned that the once-Astoria Spots Complex is slated to become a giant self-storage facility, in lieu of the ice skating rink and soccer field that the owner had wanted.

The recently signed deal has been five years in the making, Jordan Gosin of Newmark told the Commercial Observer.

In order to build an indoor soccer field, Socceroof needed to find a large space without any columns, which can get in the way of players, Gosin explained.

“It’s pretty hard to find that type of space,” he said, adding that the start-up was looking at some spots before the pandemic, which the city ultimately needed for emergency use.

Socceroof has long-wanted to be in Long Island City, Gosin told the Commercial Observer, in order to bring indoor soccer beyond Sunset Park, where its flagship indoor field is located.

Booking a Socceroof field costs upwards of $100, Patch found. The start-up also has leagues, which players can join at a rate of $850 for the entire season, or $150 for periodic "free agent" games.
