State Will Fund Increased NYPD Subway Patrols Into 2026
NYPD officers were first put on patrol on every overnight trains in the city back in January.

NEW YORK CITY — Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Thursday that the state will invest another $77 million to cover NYPD overnight subway patrols.
The funding will also cover police overtime. NYPD officers were first put on patrol on every overnight trains in the city back in January.
Hochul along with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams announced that subway crime is at its lowest level in 16 years. Overall, subway crime is down 14.4 percent compared to 2019 and 5.2 percent from 2024.

“Crime is down and ridership is up on subways thanks to major investments to keep New Yorkers safe and run better, more reliable transit,” Hochul said. “ I am deeply grateful for the work of the men and women at the NYPD who keep riders safe and remain committed to advancing public safety efforts that have successfully driven down crime on subways across New York City.”
“Never in the history of the state has the state of New York invested money in NYPD overtime. We’re going to do it again," the governor added.

It is not known at this time if the National Guard will remain on patrol in the subways. Back in September, Hochul said they would be there "for the months to come."
