Board President Voted Out, Babylon 2023-2024 School Budget Passes

BABYLON, NY — Residents ousted the incumbent Babylon board of education president Tuesday during the annual budget vote and BOE elections for the 2023 to 2024 school year.

For the Board of Education election, three seats were up in an at-large election.

Incumbent board president Carol Dell'Erba received 699 votes, denying her reelection.

Incumbent Linda Jurs obtained 759 votes, Robert Verdi, obtained 883 votes and Catherine Wieland obtained 1,212 votes.

Jurs, Verdi and Wieland will serve as trustees.

The Babylon School District's proposed budget of $59,876,501, with a budget-to-budget increase of 4.29 percent and a tax levy increase of 4.84 percent, passed with 1,020 votes for "yes" and 626 for "no."

Since the proposed budget overrides the tax cap, it required a 60 percent vote to pass.

Residents also voted on Proposition 2, or that the Board of Education of the Babylon Union Free School District be authorized to expend funds in an amount not to exceed an estimated total cost of $1,200,000 from funds already deposited in the Babylon Union Free School District Capital Reserve Fund.

It was established on May 17, 2016 to Section 3651 of the Education Law for the Following Capital Improvement Projects: Safety and Security Upgrades at the Babylon Elementary School and the High School Athletic Fields.)

The proposition passed with 1,188 votes for "yes" and 446 votes for "no."
