Donation Funds Started for Family Forced From Moldy Apartment

Two crowdsourcing funds have popped up looking to help the displaced family of four.

A donation fund has been started for the West Babylon family forced to leave their FEMA-funded apartment after mold growths threatened the health of their son.

As reported on Monday by Patch, the Norinders left their apartment at The Harbour Club months early after finding mold growing inside of their closets, contributing to their son's asthma getting worse.

"Since October, they have been forced to relocate several times as they continue to work with their home insurance company to obtain the necessary funds to reconstruct," the description on the GiveForward donation page reads. "Unfortunately, they discovered that the apartment was infested with black mold, which destroyed many of their newly replaced belongings and made one of their sons very sick."

The family is still paying a mortgage on the home they cannot live in as well as unknown totals of both furniture and clothing lost due to the mold in their recent apartment, according to the page.

The Harbour Club has so far declined to release the family's $4,000 security deposit, noting the possibility of damage done by the family contributing to the mold in the family.

The donation page has been set up on GiveForward, a fundraising website similar to use as crowdfunding KickStarter, and has already raised $1,200. A similar campaign has also popped up on crowdfunding website IndieGoGo has received $3,000 in donations.

Donations can be made through credit or PayPal.

The family has been forced to move out and move in with Lauren Norinder's mother for the time being. The Nordiners lost their West Babylon home in the storm surge of Hurricane Sandy in October.
