W. Babylon Mold Issue Turned Over to State Health Dept.

Town and county check into claims of excessive mold at the West Babylon apartment complex.

The West Babylon apartment complex whose spaces reportedly filled with mold, forcing a Sandy-affected family to break their lease early, will have the matter turned over to the state health department.

According to PIX11, Suffolk County's Health Department and the Town of Babylon Department of Environmental Control showed up at The Harbour Club complex in southern West Babylon on Thursday, August 8 to investigate claims made that a number of apartments there had serious mold issues.

Last week, the Norinder family told PIX11 they were forced to break their lease on the apartment early after they found mold growing in their closets and behind their furniture in the complex.

Rich Groh, an employee with the Babylon Town Department of Environmental Control said the findings from Thursday's visit would be sent to the State Health Department for their own research and rulings on the apartment.

The family had been living in complex since January and were relocated there by FEMA after their West Babylon home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in October.

Lab results by two different companies brought in by the Norinders and the Harbour Club's owner found differing results, but media attention forced local governments to step in and check themselves.
