QUEENS, NY — As thunderous rainstorms swept through Queens Thursday afternoon, three people got trapped in a car during a flash flood, fire officials said.
The people were driving near 208th Place and the Cross Island Service Road, which runs parallel to the parkway of the same name, about 2:30 p.m. when they got caught in a downpour, according to the FDNY.
The three people got trapped in the car as they faced what fire officials described as "heavy rain" in a "short period of time." The incident was later deemed a flash flood by the FDNY.

The flood and rescue happened about the same time as over 130 Baysiders nearby lost electricity amid a citywide heat wave, Patch reported.
The thunderous rain and sweltering heat mirrors increasingly brutal weather conditions across the nation, where hundreds of millions of people are living under heat warnings.
Climate change is likely to blame for record-breaking heat waves, experts told ABC News, and major American cities aren't prepared to deal with the combined climate-induced consequences of blackouts and heat waves, research suggests.
