OAKLAND GARDENS, QUEENS — The Alley Pond Environmental Center is moving to a new home for the next two years while its building on Northern Boulevard gets a renovation.
On Saturday, the nonprofit will celebrate the grand opening of its temporary home at 224-65 76th Ave. with a day of free activities, including arts and crafts and music.
The Alley Pond Environmental Center, which also goes by APEC, is an environmental education organization based in Alley Pond Park.

A group of educators and activists founded the center in 1972 with the help of the city's parks department, according to the center's website. It moved into its Northern Boulevard home, a former furniture store, in 1976.
The center packed up and moved out of that space at the end of December to make way for the renovation project, which officials say will take about two years.
