Bayside Hotel "Filled To Capacity" After Turning Into Migrant Shelter

The city turned the Anchor Inn Hotel into a new emergency shelter over the weekend, housing over 100 migrants.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — The Anchor Inn Hotel in Bayside filled its 66 rooms after the city turned the building into a new emergency shelter for migrants crossing the Mexican border, according to Council Member Vickie Paladino.

"It is filled to capacity," Paladino said on Wednesday.

The city turned the Anchor Inn Hotel into a new emergency shelter over the weekend, housing over 100 men who are part of the rapid influx of migrants coming into the U.S.

The 66-room lodging facility in Bayside is sheltering 110 men exclusively between the ages of 20 and 40. Each person is expected to sign in and sign out every time they enter or leave the hotel.

The city has installed more than 100 emergency shelters across to address the increase in the need for shelter services for asylum seekers.

"We are leaving no stone unturned as part of our emergency response, and we will continue to utilize every tool at our disposal to ensure that we can meet the needs of each individual and family that comes to us seeking shelter," a DSS spokesperson said.

About 54,000 migrants have arrived in the city since last spring as Southern states bus asylum seekers to states like New York and Massachusetts.
