Bayside's Cardozo High School To Gain 548 Seats: Report
The overcrowded high school's expansion is expected to open by Fall 2022, QNS reported.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS -- An overcrowded high school in Bayside will soon undergo an expansion to provide the hundreds of seats it desperately needs.
Plans are already underway to bring the 50,000-square-foot addition to Benjamin Cardozo High School, which is slated to gain 548 seats by the time it's finished in Fall 2022, QNS first reported. City Councilman Barry Grodenchik and the School Construction Authority (SCA) confirmed the news.
Those extra seats aren't meant to bring more students into the Bayside school, but rather to free up space for the 3,744 students already enrolled, Grodenchik told QNS. The school is currently at 156 percent capacity.

“The community and the SCA have been looking for new high school seats in Queens,” he said. “[The expansion] is desperately needed and will go a long way to relieve the overcrowding.”
The addition is slated to be built on unused land next to the property on 58th Ave., but will likely be in its design phase for the next year, an SCA spokesperson told QNS. The final product will include new classrooms and other amenities that have not yet been determined.
