BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A new emergency shelter for migrants opened in Bayside over the weekend, according to Council Member Vickie Paladino.

The shelter opened at the Anchor Inn Hotel on Northern Boulevard and 215th Street on Saturday. The emergency shelter will be used for six to nine months, according to Paladino.

“We have a legal and moral obligation to provide shelter to all who come to us in need, and as we respond to a humanitarian crisis of national importance, our teams continue to work around the clock to procure emergency shelter capacity," said a DSS spokesperson.

“I will be closely monitoring this situation and I plan to be onsite to personally oversee the intake and assess the situation, as well as speak with members of the surrounding community,” Paladino said in a statement on Friday.

Several other shelters have been installed across the city to temporarily house migrant families coming from the U.S.-Mexico border. As of April 12, the city has opened 103 emergency shelters to address the unprecedented increase in the need for shelter services driven by the influx of recently-arrived asylum seekers.
