Bayside Grad To Run 4 Marathons In 2 Days For Gun Safety Fundraiser

Bayside High School graduate Matthew Fertig aims to raise $15,000 by running from Montauk to Manhattan next month.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A Bayside High School alum is set to run four marathons in two days to raise money for a gun violence prevention group.

Matthew Fertig, 22, plans to run 120 miles across Long Island from Montauk to Manhattan on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13, the former Queens student told Patch.

“Gun violence is one of the most pressing issues in our country today,” said Fertig. “When I was a senior, the Parkland shooting happened, and in the four years since then, nothing has changed.”

Fertig hopes to raise $15,000 throughGoFundMe for Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization that advocates for gun control.

The avid runner, who works for a city tech company, told Patch he was a member of Bayside High School’s track team for three years before graduating in 2018 and earning his degree at New York University Shanghai.

“I would not have gotten into running if it wasn't for running with my teammates at Bayside,” he said. “There are so many fond memories of running after school around the neighborhood.”
